FAQ – “Is the extra money you spend on composite decking vs. wood worth it”. The answer to this question depends on several factors. The most important being: What is your initial budget; what is your threshold for maintenance and where do you live.

Let’s face it, our Central Oregon weather can be tough on wood and unless you are diligent about maintenance, even the best cedar deck can look beat up after only a few years. Home owners also need to consider the annual cost of maintaining a wood deck which can range from $1-$3 per sq ft every 2-3 years (cleaning, staining and sometimes sanding). Not to say composite is zero maintenance but it is certainly low maintenance compared to wood. As far as budget is concerned, composite will usually cost more up front but the cost of owning a composite deck should be less over the long term. Composite decking has come a long way over the years; big improvements in quality, lots of color choices, more realistic wood look, long term warranties etc.

Still, composite is fake and will never have the look of a real cedar deck (at least not yet). If you are willing to spend the time and money to maintain your wood deck then it might be the right choice for you.
